LETS TALK FOOTBALL: REAL MADRID TOO STRONG FOR MANCHESTER UNITED
The match between the UEFA Champions League winner vs Europa League winner was a match between the well organized team against a team still yet to find its identity.
Manchester United started the more attacking and brighter side in the first few minutes of the encounter, however as soon as the European champion found their composure with Toni Kroos at the helm of calming the middle of the park even with the constant nuisance and well mannered approach of the elegant newly signed Matic, Kroos however found a way to curb the middle with help of the ever energetic Casemiro, he was well calculated and articulate with his timing and runs.
All these freed up one of the best midfielder in world football Luka Modric, he kept it really simple and his move were picked up by runs of Gareth Bale and Isco who were switching places in the first 30mins of the match. Ramos was always looking to start the attack from the back at times too.
Credit to the elegance of Matic but Paul Pogba’s indecisiveness in crucial time and positions cost United and he made Jesse Lingard and Mkhitaryan to be defensive. Jose’s side turned to a back three at first in the match which made it difficult for Smalling, Lindelof and Damian to cope with Real Madrid possession hugging play between Isco – Kroos – Modric most times.
Casemiro scored after loads of pressure in Manchester United area. United unable to be composed at the back Casemiro looks to be slightly ahead of Lindelof during the pass that led to the goal. Manchester United reverted to sitting at the back after the goal while Real Madrid tossed the ball around with their amazing Modric – Kroos – Isco.
During the second half, United brought in Rashford for his directness to replace Lingard. With substitution, it didn’t stop Real Madrid to mount early pressure on Manchester United with Benzema – Isco and Bale combining well to which score a very beautiful second goal.
Mourinho bringing in Fellaini changed the game a bit for Manchester United, Lukaku missed a sitter after Pogba header was parried. United continued mounting pressure with Rashford also making direct runs. United got one back with Lukaku pouncing on Navas inability to deal with Matic’s shot.
A lot happened during the game but it all showed that Real Madrid are levels ahead of Manchester United and without Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid were still the best team of the night, Real Madrid hitting the woodwork twice and United could have scored more too.
Real Madrid showed why they are the best team in Europe and it was a joy to watch the best team in the world play with such elegance and attacking from different angles. Real Madrid look like a team rearing to go yet again this season.
Manchester United on the other hand played the best team in Europe without their best defender (Baily). But the alienation of Anthony Martial in this United team should be a major concern given that Mourinho was looking at his defensive side of Manchester United rather than also going with a Martial who had a swell game against Real Madrid weeks ago with his directness and skill. The match also showed that Pogba was freed given how Matic played but I personally thing Pogba’s attitude towards big games should be a major concern for United supporters. He look like a guy trying to prove to the world that he is a world class player by trying to “Do Too Much” and also not keeping it simple. The earlier Pogba realizes he is not a Cristiano Ronaldo of Midfielders the better.
However, I see Manchester United getting better this season and with proper adaptation and transition between midfield and attack they will be better. The United forwards also needs to be more clinical if they are to avoid similar draws like last season.
